Program Description

Explore and learn from the people of Belize!

This Central American country is an extraordinary place. You will stay in the quiet village of San Antonio located in the Toldeo District. It is made up of about 1000 Mopan Maya villagers.

Visit Afro-Caribbean and Mayan Indian communities and learn about their unique cultural heritage.

The trip is not for the casual traveler and will involve exposure to the elements. But for those seeking adventure and a deep understanding of the relationships between people and environment this is an excellent opportunity.

SO 213 Cultural Anthropology:
Studies the principles of culture and of social organization through intensive exploration of other societies and of American society, with special emphasis on gender roles and the status of women in different societies. Students will utilize these skills and concepts to do actual ethnographic fieldwork with the indigenous peoples of Belize’s most remote area.
