Program Description

New Orleans: Rebuild, Rejoice
Domestic Service Trip
Sponsored by the Center for Ministry & Service

Regis students will be given the opportunity to apply for a service trip to New Orleans, LA, sponsored by the Center for Ministry and Service. On this trip students will join St. Bernard Project in their mission to provide housing for all those whom were effected by Hurricane Katrina. St. Bernard Project's mission is to ensure that disaster-impacted citizens and communities recover in a prompt, efficient and predictable manner. The rebuild and rejoice trip takes its name from the events that have occurred in New Orleans in the past 10 years. Rebuild: On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the New Orleans area, leaving massive destruction in her wake. Eighty percent of New Orleans was under water; ten years later, an estimated 6,000 families who owned homes before Hurricane Katrina still do not have the funds or resources necessary to rebuild. Rejoice: New Orleans is one of the world's most fascinating cities – it's home to a truly unique melting pot of culture, food and music. Students will celebrate this culture in many ways from the foods they eat to the music they hear and the places they visit. From the swamps to the French Quarter, students will experience all New Orleans has to offer. Time for reflection will prove this trip to be an experience for the mind, body and spirit!

Service trips are ideal experiences for students who seek to use their talents to the service of those most in need, who seek to learn from new cultures and traditions, and students who are willing to have an open heart and an open mind in the face of new challenges. This is a credit bearing opportunity and attendance at pre-trip and post-trip meetings are expected of all students who enroll. Fundraising is also expected of all students who are accepted.

Applying is the first step to this process. After your application is finalized and received, you will be interviewed by the staff and faculty members leading this trip.
